Focus on developing the quality of tourism human resources to meet the demand of recovery and improve international competitiveness

(TITC) - This is one of the main points in the speech of Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) at the Conference "Orientation and training solutions for hotel human resources to restore and develop international tourism in Vietnam". The Conference was organised in Ho Chi Minh City on 9th August by Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA) and Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association.

The Conference taking place in the framework of event “Linking the strength of Vietnam tourism” includes 2 sessions: Session 1: provide an overview of tourist accommodation and shortcomings in the quality of tourism human resources in current accommodation establishments. Session 2: find out typical training models, from which there are suggestions and policies in the near future.

In the conference, Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, VNAT’s Chairman said, Vietnam tourism achieved impressive results in 2019 as welcoming more than 18 million international arrivals, increased by 16.2% compared to 2018, serving 85 million domestic visitor arrivals; total tourist receipts reached VND 755,000 billion. In the same year, the tourism industry adopted 30,000 accommodation establishments with 650,000 rooms.

However, the severe effect from Covid-19 led the industry to crisis, the supply chain was broken, the number of domestic visitors decreased by more than 50%, international visitors decreased by 90%, the room occupancy was only 10%.

With the motto “Adapt safely and flexibly, effectively control the Covid-19 pandemic” and the determination of the whole country, tourism has recovered gradually and developed wisely with the support of technology. It is required of Vietnam to put great effort to reach the goal for 2022.

In recent times, the search volume for Vietnam tourism has increased gradually, the interest from international markets to Vietnam ranks top in the world. In the new context, with new upcoming opportunities, it is necessary to rethink and innovate the working process, emphasized VNAT’s Chairman Nguyen Trung Khanh. Safety in tourism activities should be prioritized and synchronized from all levels, sectors, and localities with the active participation of people, businesses and tourists.

Once World tourism recovers, Vietnam tourism will face many challenges of destination competition. On the other hand, this is also considered as a great opportunity for Vietnam tourism to be the top choice destination for international tourists. To make it feasible, skillful, energetic, enthusiastic, creative and responsible labor forces are needed for the preparation of the period of tourism recovery and development in the period of 2022 - 2030.

According to Mr. Vu The Binh, VITA’s Chairman, after two years of being affected by the pandemic, tourism human resources suffered heavy losses, so the issue of human resource training, especially for accommodation establishments, is very important. However, this is not an issue that can be solved easily and swiftly, and it is necessary to change the method of training tourism human resources to suit the new trend.

With the presentation on “The current state of the accommodation system in Vietnam, the requirements for hotel human resources” of Ms. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of Hotel Department (VNAT), a brief phrase of the quality and quantity of tourism accommodation establishments. Accordingly, in the period 2001 - July 2022, with the growth of accommodation establishments in Vietnam, this makes the supply pressure on accommodation establishments. The number of 5-star hotels and motels has increased rapidly, creating a large capacity. Additionally, homestay and tourist apartments grow robustly. The accommodation category from 3-5 stars has 1,046 establishments with 155,073 rooms (by July 2022). Total accommodation establishments have 700,000 rooms with a need of 485,000 workers.

Pointing out a number of challenges in training tourism human resources, Ms. Binh indicated some tasks should be completed swiftly and attentively: consolidating human resources at all levels, developing high-quality human resources, senior management personnel, standardizing human resources in tourist accommodation establishments, applying advanced technology, and digital transformation in managing tourist accommodation establishments, raising the sense of responsibility of workers in accommodation establishments…
