Rare Hawksbill Sea Turtle Rescued After Becoming Entangled in Oil-Soaked Fishing Net in Con Dao Waters

On the morning of May 24, 2026, while cleaning the beach in the Tai Sinh Zone area, local volunteers discovered a hawksbill sea turtle entangled in a drifting fishing net. The turtle was injured, covered in oil residue, and appeared severely exhausted.

Immediately after the discovery, the group carefully cut away the net wrapped around the turtle and contacted forest rangers from the Ben Dam Ranger Station for assistance. After receiving first aid and having oil cleaned from its shell and body, the turtle was cared for and successfully released back into the ocean.

The hawksbill turtle was difficult to spot as it was trapped in a net mixed with an oil slick.

Its body was covered in oil believed to have leaked from fishing and transport vessels.

One of its front flippers had been seriously injured due to prolonged entanglement in the fishing net.

This incident serves as another stark reminder of the devastating impact of “ghost nets” and abandoned fishing gear on marine ecosystems, particularly endangered sea turtle species whose populations continue to decline. What may seem like harmless discarded nets can become deadly traps beneath the sea.

Local residents, together with staff from the Ben Dam Ranger Station, helped remove oil and marine parasites attached to the turtle’s shell.

After the turtle was released, volunteers also collected oil-contaminated fishing nets and marine debris that had washed ashore in the area.

Every small action—such as collecting litter, preventing fishing gear from being discarded into the sea, or actively participating in environmental conservation activities—helps preserve Con Dao’s clean, healthy, and vibrant marine ecosystem for future generations.
