Before 1975, this place is called “The hell on earth” as it was where the French colonialism and the US imperialist were detained, brutally tortured a lot of Vietnamese patriotic, revolutionaries during 113 years. To come to Con Dao, visitors can go by two means: by sea and by air. It takes you 12 hours if go by sea (with two ships: Con Dao 09 and 10) and about 40 minutes if you move by air on ATR 72 Con Dao - Ho Chi Minh airline, or about 30 minutes if you fly on Con Dao - Can Tho airline.
Con Dao has endowed with a lot of beaches which are very beautiful and dreamy scenery. These are favourable conditions for tourism development such as ecotourism, camping, fishing, diving, hiking, resort tourism, cultural and historical tourism, returning to the roots... . Coming to Con Dao, tourists will be visit the famous revolutionary historic relics of our country such as Con Dao prison system, the Tiger cages of France, Tiger cages of US, Pier 914, Ma Thien Lanh Bridge, Phu Son prison, Phu Hai prison, Hang Duong cemetery; Tomb of Ms Vo Thi Sau ... Con Dao has a forest and sea ecosystem which is very diversified with many rare marine animals like tortoise, turtles, dugong, lobster, grouper, dolphin, holothurian ... There are many clean, blue and pristine beaches such as Dam Trau beach, Ong Dung beach, Dat Doc beach, Nhat beach, large sand-bank beach, Bay Canh Islet, Hon Cau beach, Dam Tre beach...
Besides, the Con Dao sea also has many grass covers and rows of coral with colorful and diversified style. Visitors can explore the bottom of the ocean, taking diving to see corals and watch flocks of fish swimming in the pure sea, or participate in fishing, squid fishing at sea. Visitors can stay overnight in some islands such as Bay Canh islet to watch sea turtles lay their eggs directly on the sand.
Con Dao district has just been approved for "The overall plan on development of the national tourism resort by 2030" by the Prime Minister with Decision No.870 / QD-TTg. Currently, Con Dao is focusing aggressively to implement this Decision, developing Con Dao National tourism park on the principal that basing on the strength points of ocean, forest resources of Con Dao National Park; promote the value of the nation’s special historic relic.
