The revolutionary life of General Secretary Le Hong Phong

Comrade Le Hong Phong, who made great contributions to the restoration of the Party's system in the 1930s of the XX century. His name is attached to the challenging and drastic phase of the Vietnamese revolution. He became a creditable symbol in Con Dao prison. "Live to strive for revolutionary ideals but be ready to die for revolutionary cause."

Comrade Le Hong Phong also named Le Huy Doan, born in 1902, in Thong Lang village, Phu Long commune, now in Hung Thong commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province. Born in a poor family but he was very smart, good at study, frank nature. Enlightened by Revolution and patriotism passionate, he participated in revolutionary activities very early.

At the end of 1923, comrade Le Hong Phong and some other comrades made their way to Siam, then to Guangzhou, China. In 1924, he joined the "Tam Tam Xa" and set up the "Thanh Nien Cach Mang Dong Chi Hoi", published Thanh Nien newspaper. He became the outstanding student of comrade Nguyen Ai Quoc. There, he was admitted to the Communist Party of China on February 10, 1926. In October 1926, he was sent to the Soviet Union to study the Military Air Force Arguments, the Military Pilot Training School, and became Vietnam's first pilot.

After many years working and studying abroad, in November 1931, comrade Le Hong Phong returned to the country to join the Central Committee of the Party.

In spring of 1935, MaCao held the Conference and elected the Foreign Affairs Committee, which functioned as an interim Central Executive Committee consisting of 03 comrades led by Comrade Le Hong Phong as Secretary General.

In March 1935, at the first Congress of the Party in Macao Comrade Le Hong Phong was elected as General Secretary of the Party.

In July 1935, he led the delegation to the 7th Communist International Congress in Moscow with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Hoang Van Niem, and was elected member of the Communist International Executive Committee. Then Le Hong Phong and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai were married by the Board of Directors.

In November 1937, Comrade returned to the country to continue his activities. By June 1938, he was arrested in Cho Lon, sentenced to 6 years imprisonment with the reason of using false ID card and then brought back home, he returned to Saigon and continue to operate.

In September 1939, the French secret police arrested his comrade for the second time at the prison in Saigon but there was no evidence to convict him. In the end, French colonial officials sentenced him to five years in prison on charges of "being responsible for the South Vietnam uprising" and exiled in Con Dao in 1940.

On 06/9/1942, because of severe dysentery accompanied by enemy tortures, Comrade Le Hong Phong breathed his last breath at the No. 05 Cell, the special prison of Bagne II of Con Dao prison. In the last moments, comrade Le Hong Phong asked his comrades to send the message to the Party: "Please send words to the Party, Le Hong Phong remained faithful in the glorious triumph of revolution till the very end."

In Con Dao, the French colonialists used all tortures to torture comrade Le Hong Phong and other leaders of the Party. However, with the responsibility of the Party's top leader, Le Hong Phong bravely endured all tortures,on the last days were at Bagne II Cell (Phu Son camp), the guards brutally beaten him while he was eating, he still calmly said: "The enemy's sword can cut offcast iron, but it must buckle in front of the courage of the communists."
