Ba Ria - Vung Tau – With a favorable start to 2025, Con Dao National Park anticipates an increase in the number of sea turtles coming to nest on the island in the near future.

On January 19, Con Dao National Park reported that from December 14, 2024, to January 14, 2025, the park successfully rescued and relocated 14 sea turtle nests, transferring a total of 1,247 eggs to safe incubation areas. During this period, 35 nests hatched, and 1,910 hatchlings were released into the sea under controlled conditions.

According to the park's assessment, these promising results at the start of the year indicate that nesting beaches are becoming safer and better restored, which bodes well for an active 2025 nesting season as many mother turtles are expected to return to this "safe homeland" to lay eggs and continue their species’ survival.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, a conservation engineer from the Conservation and International Cooperation Department at the Con Dao National Park Management Board, stated that sea turtles lay eggs year-round, with the peak nesting season occurring from June to October each year.

In 2024, a total of 387 mother turtles laid 1,161 nests, amounting to 111,986 eggs in Con Dao. The Bay Canh Ranger Station rescued up to 849 nests (73.2%). The average hatching success rate was 76.8%, with an average incubation period of 54 days.

In 2024, there was a decrease in the number of sea turtle nests. This was attributed to both the natural nesting cycle of sea turtles and the impact of the El Niño phenomenon. However, based on projections for 2025, the number of nesting turtles is expected to increase again in line with the cycle, and exceed the numbers recorded the previous year.
The sea turtle conservation program in Con Dao has received strong community participation, including volunteers, businesses, and tourists, which has significantly enhanced its effectiveness. Each returning hatchling carries with it the hope of continuing the extraordinary survival journey of sea turtles.
“Each turtle nest is a testament to the tireless efforts of Con Dao National Park’s staff, combined with the collective contributions of the community. Our goal is not only to make Con Dao a paradise for tourists, but also a sanctuary for these endangered sea turtles,” Mr. Duc emphasized.
