Enterprise community joins hand to reduce plastic waste in Con Dao

On December 9th, 2023, the People's Committee of Con Dao district (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) coordinated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Vietnam) and representatives of airlines and airports, passenger boat companies, passenger ports, tourism services business establishments operating in Con Dao district held a signing ceremony to commit to participating in reducing plastic and launched the check-in model "Plastic-reducing tourism" in Con Dao district.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Huynh Trung Son, Vice Chairman of Con Dao District People's Committee, said that Con Dao district has strengths in natural landscape along with revolutionary historical values ​​and has a strategic position in ensuring national defense security and island sovereignty. That’s why the Ba Ria - Vung Tau province Party and Government always pay special attention to conservation, exploitation, and socio-economic development in Con Dao.

In recent years, in addition to achievements in socio-economic, national defense, and security, Con Dao has been facing many environmental difficulties and challenges that affect sustainable development
According to statistics, the average amount of household solid waste generated in Con Dao currently ranges from 24-27 tons/day, the amount of waste remaining at Nhat beach (Con Dao) is about more than 70,000 tons. According to a survey by WWF-Vietnam, the amount of waste generated from tourism service businesses accounts for about 41.5% of the total plastic waste generated on the entire island.
Therefore, finding solutions to promote green growth, sustainable growth, adapting to climate change and harmony with the typical ecosystem is a top political task in Con Dao district.
In March 2022, Con Dao is the 9th locality in Vietnam to participate in the World Wildlife Fund's "Reduce Plastic Cities" initiative, which promises to reduce plastic waste emissions by 30% by 2025 and achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.
To achieve this goal, the environmental protection work in Con Dao district has received attention from the Party and government in the past period and has been approved by the local people. Many models have been implemented, such as the Green Clean Beautiful Saturday, Green House, and Plastic Waste Free Residential Area model, A school without plastic waste... has already brought practical results and is helping to raise Con Dao people's awareness and awareness of environmental protection.
Ms. Nguyen Thi My Quynh, Project Manager of WWF-Vietnam, said: “Sustainable tourism through promoting the practice of reducing emissions and building a circular economy model is a top priority for Con Dao to become a locality that is rich, beautiful, civilized, sustainable and harmonious with nature.

Currently, in Con Dao district there are 141 accommodation establishments business, with a total of 2,702 accommodation rooms, occupied by 7,000 people/day; There are 87 restaurants, eateries, 41 gift and souvenir businesses; 16 travel companies; about 450 passenger cars transporting tourists in the island; 48 ships and high-speed boats transporting visitors to small islands; 3 airlines and 3 boats transporting passengers from the mainland to Con Dao. By signing a commitment to reduce plastic through specific actions in production, business, and services, enterprises and local communities have affirmed the role, voice, and responsibility of each organization and individual in the ecological environment and development of Con Dao.

At the ceremony, the People's Committee of Con Dao District and investors and enterprises in the tourism service field of Con Dao signed a commitment to reduce Con Dao's plastic consumption and launched a "Reduce plastic tourism check-in model” to convey the message of plastic-reducing tourism and call for enterprises and business units operating in the district to participate in activities of protecting the environment and marine ecosystem in Con Island, to limit the use of single-use plastic products to attract tourists to raise awareness, change behavior and habits using single-use plastic products, aiming to say no to plastic waste in Con Dao in 2030.

After the ceremony, Con Dao District People's Committee organized a beach cleaning campaign to send local people and tourists a message of practical actions towards a green, environmentally friendly lifestyle, minimizing the use of single-use plastic products, and protecting the environment and marine ecosystem in Con Dao.
