International visitors to Vietnam reduced in May

International visitors to Vietnam decreased 9% over the previous month after four months consecutively reached one million.

According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam received over 972,000 international visitors in May. This is the first month this year that the number of foreign visitors was less than one million.

The largest drop was tourists from Europe, in which Sweden, Denmark and Norway at over 50%. With tourists from Asia, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Thailand visitors also fell slightly while other visitors from other countries rose steadily.

However, this decline is not unexpected of tourism industry because this month began low season of international tourists. According to travel experts, peak season of international tourists lasts from October to April every year.

In particular, visitors coming by sea this month also fell sharply with nearly 6,000 visitors, down 88% over the previous month and 76% over the same period.

Despite lower than the average in the first 4 months, international visitors in May still increased nearly 27% compared with May 2016, total 5 months reached over 5.2 million, up nearly 30% over the same period. Top foreign visitors are Chinese, Korean, Hong Kong, Russian ...
